Al Zeina Community transitions to an energy efficient community with 73% reduction in energy consumption

Al Zeina is a mixed-use development located in Al Raha Beach, Abu Dhabi. The community comprises 315,000m2 of residential (apartments and villas) and retails area and a basement parking of approximately 128,000 m2. The community developed by Aldar Properties is managed by Provis Community Management firm.

The community was spending over AED 2 million on their annual energy bills that was generated by gas-powered hot water system. Al Zeina wanted to adopt a sustainable approach to community living in line Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalization Strategy 2030 and onboarded ENGIE Solutions to design a solution.

The ENGIE Solution: Energy efficient heat pumps

ENGIE Solutions replaced the gas-powered hot system in the community with energy efficient heat pumps. However, one of the challenges was installing 18 heat pumps on the roof of the buildings without the use of mobile cranes, while ensuring that hot water supply to the community was not compromised at any point.

With the help of an experienced team comprising engineers and safety experts, heat pumps were airlifted to the rooftop by helicopter. All 18 heat pumps weighing 1.3 tonnes were airlifted in only 12 hours with no interference to community life. The new pumps were successfully connected to the water system, as a result, the energy consumption was reduced by 73%, equivalent to 3.4 GWh and 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
